Sustainable Additive Manufacturing: BASF Forward AM Pioneers Eco-Friendly 3D Printing

“With great power comes great responsibility.”
This statement resonates more than ever, especially when it comes to the transformative force of Additive Manufacturing (AM). As AM becomes a significant driving force worldwide, our obligation towards environmental sustainability grows in parallel. Leading this change is BASF’s Forward AM, deeply committed to evaluating and addressing the environmental ramifications of additive manufacturing.

The Q4 of 2022 marked a milestone with BASF Forward AM launching its long-term initiative, #ProjectZero. This program comprises the ongoing evolution of eco-friendly products, solutions, methodologies, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs). LCAs allow us to gauge and relay the environmental effects of the 3D printing sector. By proactively quantifying and scrutinizing our environmental footprint through LCAs, BASF Forward AM strives to minimize its carbon footprint.

Sustainability strategy
Leading the AM in Sustainability

By the end of 2023, BASF Forward AM promises to offer the broadest range of LCAs and Carbon Compensated Materials in the additive manufacturing industry. While relentlessly working on carbon reduction programs, BASF Forward AM also puts the circular economy, biodegradability, and recyclability at the forefront. Considering the imminent threat of climate change, exploring sustainable alternatives and assessing the potential of additive manufacturing in carbon emission reduction is imperative for BASF Forward AM.

Under Forward AM’s robust leadership, our work approach has undergone a significant transformation, nurturing team members to make eco-conscious choices. We are wholly committed to understanding the environmental implications of our materials throughout their life cycle — development, production, and consumer usage. With this knowledge, our customers can make sustainable choices for their ventures.

The Role of LCAs in AM industry
Life cycle assessment

Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) serve as a critical instrument for measuring environmental impacts tied to product production. At BASF Forward AM, we prioritize sustainability and transparency for our clientele and the additive manufacturing industry. Currently, we provide LCAs for various materials, including HP 3D High Reusability PP, Ultrasint® PA11, TPU01, TPU 88A, and PP 1400 Black. Our ambitious plan is to include ten additional LCAs by 2023, establishing BASF Forward AM as the top material supplier in terms of LCAs within the 3D printing industry.

Through LCAs, we deliver comprehensive reports on the material, energy, and resource usage throughout a product’s lifespan. These assessments consider the entire industry value chain and calculate an emission score.

BASF Forward AM’s dedication to sustainability and eco-friendly solutions demonstrates its commitment to responsible manufacturing practices. By promoting sustainable alternatives and the use of materials with a reduced environmental impact, we aspire to contribute to a more sustainable future.
