SABIC Innovates with New PCR-Based Noryl Resin Portfolio for Carbon Footprint Reduction

SABIC’s Groundbreaking PCR-Based Noryl Resin Portfolio

Leading the Way in Sustainability

Much like Polyamide is commonly referred to as Nylon, PPE is often synonymous with Noryl to the extent that Noryl has already become a representative product. SABIC, a major figure in the chemical industry, is pushing the boundaries of sustainability with its new PCR-Based Noryl Resin Portfolio. The new technology involves the use of 25 percent or more post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, marking a significant milestone in offering sustainable material options.

This innovative approach includes the creation of NORYL NH5120RC3 resin with 30 percent PCR content, reducing its global warming potential (GWP) by 10 percent compared to traditional fossil-based grade materials. Notably, the latest PCR-based technology can be tailored to over 200 existing NORYL resin grades and an unlimited range of new grades, depending on customer needs.

Customizable and Adaptable Solutions

These sustainable solutions can include both unreinforced and glass fiber-reinforced grades. SABIC doesn’t stop there; they offer resin customization and full technical support, ensuring circularity without compromising the robust physical properties demanded in various applications. This leads to the creation of one of the first PPE-based materials with such a high level of recycled content.

Meeting Technical Challenges

“Developing PPE-based engineering resins with high percentages of recycled material is not trivial and poses a range of technical challenges,” commented Luc Govaerts, technology director, Specialties, SABIC. But with SABIC’s expertise, the first flame-retardant NORYL material with consistent performance has been launched.

Products for a Greener Future

The new NORYL NH5120RC3 resin supports sustainability further with non-brominated/non-chlorinated flame retardance. It could be ideal for electrical applications like HVAC enclosures and photovoltaic/solar junction boxes. Besides, SABIC will be introducing bio-based PPE technology, enabling almost 100% renewable content in various NORYL grades.

“Our new PCR-based Noryl resin technology is another milestone in SABIC’s strategy to support circularity and make our products more sustainable,” said Joshua Chiaw, director, Business Management, LNP & NORYL, Specialties, SABIC.

Conclusion

SABIC’s PCR-Based Noryl Resin Portfolio is a promising step towards a sustainable future, with innovative technologies that cater to specific customer requirements. This advancement not only emphasizes the importance of recycled content but also showcases the potential to replace incumbent fossil-based grades, reducing the overall carbon footprint.
